Mental Health Treatment Programs

There is a strong need for better mental health treatment programs in the U.S. Consider these statistics from the National Alliance on Mental Illness:

• Approximately 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. (46.6 million) experiences mental illness in a given year.

• Approximately 1 in 25 adults in the U.S. (11.2 million) experiences a serious mental illness in a given year that substantially interferes with or limits one or more major life activities.

• 18.1% of adults in the U.S. have experienced an anxiety disorder such as post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and specific phobias.

• 6.9% of adults in the U.S. have had at least one major depressive episode in the past year.

• 50.5% of the 20.2 million adults in the U.S. who experience a substance abuse disorder also have a co-occurring mental illness.

Yet even with high rates of mental illness, there exists a stigma regarding the diagnosis and treatment of mental health disorders. It is crucial that care providers work to provide mental health treatment programs that are both inclusive and comprehensive and that, as a society, we all help to remove the barriers to treatment that so often leave individuals to suffer in silence.

At Synergy Health Programs, we offer care services for mental health individuals that approach treatment from multiple angles and with multiple therapeutic modalities. The goal is to not only ensure that those with mental illness get access to the support that they require, but that their treatment is customized to their unique needs and situation.

Finding the Right Mental Health Therapy Center

The type of mental health center that is best suited for an individual depends on a number of factors and should be decided mutually between a patient and their care provider.

Mental Health Treatment Programs

Inpatient Treatment

What it is
An inpatient mental illness treatment center is an intensive mode of treatment that takes place in a hospital or other clinical setting. Patients reside in the setting during their treatment.

Who it’s for
Those who are severely ill and/or those who are undergoing acute symptoms related to their mental illness.

Mental Illness Treatment Center

Residential Treatment

What it is
A therapeutic inpatient program that generally takes place at a designated residential facility.

Who it’s for
Patients who require comprehensive oversight and care but who are stable enough not to be in need of hospital-based inpatient services.

Mental Health Therapy Center

Outpatient Treatment

What it is:
A treatment program that includes regular therapy and/or medication support while a patient continues to live at home and attend school or work.

Who it’s for:
Stable, high-functioning patients who are able to follow treatment plans without constant oversight and who are able to manage their day-to-day responsibilities and activities.

Often, an individual may go through more than one mental illness treatment program. For example, a patient may attend residential treatment followed by outpatient treatment, or may start with inpatient treatment, move on to residential treatment, and finally end with outpatient treatment. Alternately, some individuals may attend only one type of mental health treatment program.

Mental Health Service Providers

There are various types of service providers who specialize in mental health services. These include:

• Psychiatrists
• Psychologists
• Social workers

• Licensed professional counselors
